Ashlee Christian is a Jewitch with a misleading surname — though in hindsight, she should have seen a calling to Interfaith Ministry coming. As a Corporate Chaplain, Ashlee hopes to bring spiritual care and whole-self support into the workplace, as well as help organizations have a trauma-informed approach to HR. Ashlee is endlessly enthusiastic about humans and their capacity for good trouble and social change. Ashlee hopes very much to see an end to rapacious capitalism within her lifetime. If not, she plans to fan the flames of revolution while she’s here. She hopes you will join her.

Will has been a shamanic practitioner for several decades and is an approved shamanic practitioner by Sandra Ingerman, one of his mentors. Additionally, he is an ordained interfaith minister / chaplain and member of the Association of Professional Chaplains. He is Clergy in Good Standing at the Chaplaincy Institute, and currently volunteers at Coming Home Hospice, located in the Castro in San Francisco and a part of the Sutter Health system.

Because of his continuing interest in non-ordinary reality, he is enrolled in a program to become a Certified Plant Medicine Integration Coach.  Graduation is scheduled for January 2024. In 2023, he traveled deep into the rainforest and sat in ceremony with Ecuadorian shamans, learning about plant medicine from the indigenous peoples.

In 2023 and 2024, Will volunteered for over 400  hours at the San Francisco Night Ministry for their Crises Call Line. He answered calls concerning addiction, suicide, end of life, spousal abuse, abject poverty, mental illness and a host of other issues related to the trauma of life.

In 2017 he founded the San Francisco Drumming and Journey Circle. The circle met monthly and was active until the start of covid. At close, there were over 1000 people on the mailing list. Only word of mouth or free social media was used for promotion. The circle encouraged journeying to non-ordinary reality in order to receive answers about the pressing issues of life.

Volunteering since October 2023 for the Buddhist Prison Ministry.

As on most journeys of self and spiritual discovery, I have been surprised. I have sat with mystery, joy, grief, encountered risk, loyal companions, troubling doubt, and precious teachers. There were times when the only thing I could do was walk away. Mercifully, I could come back decades later to find the path and the courage to begin again, recognizing that all the while I was not alone in my life, but held in the embrace of the Divine. This passage of time is both a fierce foe and a loving friend. All of this is a portion of my journey that brought me to ChI and to this moment.

Reaching down, drawing up, and listening, may we all find our strength, wisdom and love from within, without and around us. For now, my path is running concurrently with the world of plant medicine and facilitation and I am deeply grateful and humbled to be in this place, at this time.

A Rust Belt kid who entered the workforce at the peak of the Great Recession, I spent years working in factories, warehouses, and finally as an insurance claims adjuster before multiple concurrent personal crises during the pandemic forced me to reevaluate my life. The resulting period of soul-searching led me to ChI. My call to the ministry is rooted in a desire to heal relationships and prevent violence. I am currently the third-shift chaplain at Butterworth Medical Center and Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital in Grand Rapids, Michigan. I am excited to be ordained alongside such a gifted and visionary group of people.

Rev. Margaret Howe

Email: pele1@sonic.net

My spiritual path has wound from Catholic beginnings into a Buddhism grounded in an earthy, sacred, sensual Feminine. Thankfully, the thread of Spirit has sustained me through a primarily blessed life, as well as my particular challenges: injury and self-doubt seeded by the patriarchal forces of church and culture, movement through different Buddhist traditions, personal loss, and the ongoing wrestle of how to live a moral and sacred life in these times. My consistent calling has been to take compassionate action to ease the distress of our world. The Bodhisattva, who listens and responds to the cries of the world, has been my touchstone throughout years of spiritually based social activism, to now doing chaplain work at hospice and hospitals. My intention in stepping into the role of Interfaith Minister is to strengthen my capacity to radically engage with this one life– suffused with love, joy, the sacred, and transformation.

I am lucky to serve The Chaplaincy Institute seminary and community as the Community Minister. I’m lucky to live in the beautiful Pacific Northwest with my husband and a nervous little dog. My three sons are all grown men with wonderful lives of their own, but of course, they still hold a primary part of my being. I write, love, minister, and garden putting one day after another to build a beautiful life. I feel great joy and wonder accompanying folks as we seek to make meaning and find purpose. It’s my great joy to have a thriving Spiritual Direction practice where I tenderly companion seekers as they explore their spiritual lives. I enjoy feeding the hummingbirds who zoom through my backyard, strolling through the neighborhood with my spouse at the speed of a sniffy little dog, and spending time with my beloved young adult offspring.

I continue to grow in my own understanding of what my higher power is, how does “it” touch my life and so on. My lack of certainty can create insecurity and self-doubt in me, but at times I hold it as a gift. I get to truly walk with other “questioners” as we work-with and rest in the mystery, leaving space for so much. When I’m not wondering around the great unknown, I’m putting my time, heart, and talents towards supporting those recovering from addiction and trauma. Its work that feels like home.

I have continued this past year to do spiritually oriented psychotherapy practice with a mindfulness orientation, thereby integrating my work as a psychiatrist with my ministerial practice. I use meditation, guided imagery, prayer, and art therapy whenever appropriate. My goal is to help my patients identify more and more with their Higher Power: The God within and without and to use this power to support and manage their wounded child egos.

I integrate this mindfulness work with other more traditional psychotherapeutic modalities including psychodynamic psychotherapy and cognitive behavioral therapy. On one occasion, when appropriate, I also officiated at a marriage ceremony.

Currently I am a Celebrant at Spring Grove Cemetery called to do funerals/memorials for non-affiliated deceased, by their families. While I love doing these services ,co-creating with family, these are occasional only. I also serve in a volunteer capacity as Assistant to our new minister in the area of Pastoral Care where I visit congregants at home/hospital, and, again perform an occasional service/memorial. In the past three years, my niece, my sister and my great nephew died and I grieved with and officiated each Celebration of Life which, sadly and gratefully, allowed me to be chaplain/grief support/celebrant/family.

Raised under the big sky of the Midwest prairie, Rev. Lauren Van Ham, M.A., began her professional life as a performing artist in NYC before pursuing interfaith seminary studies in California. She served for 9 years as a hospital chaplain focusing in psychiatry, palliative care, and bereavement support. Moved by spirituality and ecology, Lauren’s ministry called her to a consulting firm where she custom-designed employee engagement sustainability programs for multi-national corporations. For nearly a decade, she served as Seminary Dean for the Chaplaincy Institute, and interfaith seminary and community. Lauren’s passion for spirituality, art and Earth’s teachings have supported her specialization in eco-ministry, grief & loss, and sacred activism. Her essay, “Way of the Eco-Chaplain,” appears in a collection of women’s work; and her work with Green Sangha is featured in Renewal, a documentary celebrating the efforts of religious environmental activists from diverse faith traditions across America. She is a guest writer for “Progressing Spirit.” Lauren holds degrees from Carnegie Mellon University and Naropa University. Currently, Lauren serves as Climate Action Coordinator for URI (the United Religions Initiative). She is a spiritual director and guest faculty for several schools in the Bay Area.

Spiritual companion/guide, healer, interfaith chaplain, contemplative photographer, mystic… I care for the soul through creative, sacred, healing arts. In 2005 a near-death experience turned my world upside down and accelerated my quest to know my true soul-self. I have wandered the labyrinth of life for decades as a seeker, through spiritual trainings and direct experiences ––from adventurous pilgrimages to mystery school and seminary, from life at an ashram to work as a hospital chaplain–– only to find that what I was looking for was already inside. My wish is that we all walk in the world awake, connected with and respecting our inner truth, our fellow beings and the natural world around us. If, in your waking you are as Rumi was, “a wanderer, worshipper, lover of leaving,” let’s walk together.

I came to Interfaith Chaplaincy from a career in the arts. Creative self-expression and deep connection have been at the heart of my practice. As a visual multi-media artist I worked as an environmental artist/activist for 20+ years while living in Southeast Asia.

Serving as a suicide first responder and Stanford’s Director of Mental Health & Wellness taught g not only calm in holding space for death/darkness but also to divest from violent institutions/carceral systems and center community care+critical connections as a Divine liberatory Art praxis. g dreams of establishing a mental health respite center that instrumentalizes play, Ancestral plant medicine, and multimedia for disabled QTBIPoC survivors. This vision came to them following an NDE that opened portals to past/present/Future lifetimes of spiritual power (misattributed to white Jesus/a call to military chaplaincy once upon a time) and their dissertational research on Indigenous Corean proto-transgenderal shamans and drag as embodied psychospiritual healing—and brought them to ChI to gain tools to facilitate queer healing through religious trauma, pursue entheogenic/psychedelic healing certification, and unfurl the Divine in Me-sus and We-sus. // “I am my Ancestors’ wildest Dreams; I live to be my Dreams’ wildest Ancestor.”
