Building Bridges: Witnessing and Working in a Shelter at the US/Mexico Border with Rev. Deb Hansen

OPEN TO ALL! Join us to explore facets and frontiers of spirituality through an innovative and interfaith lens with the ChI Community.

Rev. Deb Hansen shares:

When I began to feel a pull to go to the borderlands three years ago, it didn’t make sense. I’ve been involved in water, energy, and climate issues in my home state of Michigan. I have more interest in community and culture than laws and policies — and had no experience working with people fleeing violence, poverty, economic and political upheaval. It’s a remarkable place to do community ministry in the spirit of solidarity and in memory of my own ancestors. in truth, I find I need this work to move beyond my bubble of privilege into a deeper humanity and solidarity with the larger human family.

Rev. Deb Hansen lives in beautiful Northern Michigan half the year. In winter, Deb volunteers in a shelter for people seeking refuge from violence, poverty, and political and climate instability at the U.S./Mexico border in El Paso. She’s been a border-crosser most of her life when it comes to culture, language, religion, ethnicity, and worldview. She is an Interfaith spiritual companion with an interest in collective healing and the reclaiming of culture. She has advocated for access to clean, affordable water and for energy democracy at the community and state level for many years.

She is no stranger to eco-anxiety and sorrow as we enter the time of climate instability and the 6th mass extinction. For her, reclaiming a reverence and respect for life and learning to reconnect with the seasons and cycles of the natural world, joy and laughter are medicines. Deb’s interests include writing, foraging, courageous conversations, ancient and embodied wisdom, and finding joy and beauty in community and the simplicity of everyday life.
